A Note from the Directors

This year marks the 50th anniversary of ABBA winning the Eurovision contest in 1974 and the 25th anniversary of the musical Mamma Mia! For decades, the catchy lyrics and uplifting rhythms of the Swedish pop group have inspired generations worldwide. For many, they capture the musical moment of the 1970s and early 1980s.

This musical, while bringing crowd favorites such as “Dancing Queen” to life onstage, goes one step further by exploring the power behind the lyrics. In the opening number “I Have a Dream,” we see Sophie sailing under the stars and dreaming of finding her father and completing her family. She sings, “I have a dream, a song to sing, to help me cope with anything.” She keeps this dream alive throughout the journey despite the setbacks and finds an unexpected resolution in the end. As you journey along with Sophie tonight, we hope you think about your own song that keeps you going and we hope you, like Sophie, can “see the wonder of a fairy tale” so you can “take the future, even if you fail.”

This fairy tale journey would not be possible without the support of our community. We would like to thank Dr. Russell Fox for his enthusiastic support of the arts, Janay Bird for her guidance, Douglas Bissonette for his continuous encouragement and attendance, our colleagues Christopher Thomas and Nathan Park, and the amazing custodial staff of FHS. Thank you to Lisa Atkins for her costuming concept in “Under Attack.” Thank you to Christopher Tone for photography. We are blessed to have a supportive parent community; thank you parent volunteers who kept us fed, helped build our set, and will host our cast party. And a special thank you to our families who sacrificed time so that we could create this story together.

Welcome to the Summer Night Taverna. Feel the beat of the tambourine!
