A Note from the Directors
Once Upon a Mattress is the 16th annual Frederick High School musical, and it’s the second time that FHS has performed this show. To follow the success of The Music Man, the artistic team at FHS selected this musical for its fun, entertaining, and uplifting qualities. The students have attacked it with gusto, and have thoroughly enjoyed creating such a whimsical and fantastical production.
While some of the themes in Mattress can feel dated, we feel that the heart of the story is a timeless message about overcoming adversity and endeavoring to pursue our dreams. Everyone can relate to someone in the show, whether it be the princess from a far-off land vying for acceptance; the prince who just wishes for a partner in the face of the overbearing queen; or the members of the kingdom who put themselves in danger in the hopes of a brighter day ahead. In the end good triumphs over the stubborn and self-absorbed, and everyone learns to love and grow with one another for the betterment of their future.
Mattress would not have been possible without an incredible team of hard working artists, practical visionaries, and most of all, a desire to see our students succeed. To the Directors, Instructors, Coaches, Families, and Volunteers who took time out of their busy lives to make sure that the musical theatre students of Frederick High School could have a successful, fun, and safe experience: we cannot thank you enough. Please enjoy our show!
